Long Lines for Great Food

Some have come for the game, some to see the school’s award-winning band, and seemingly everybody has come for a snack, at least judging by the never-ending lines in front of the stadium’s concession stand. Every cashier at every window is quickly ringing up orders, but the crowd never seems to let up.

The volunteer parents who once ran the concession operation wanted to be able to watch their kids on the field, thus the school’s food service department is now operating the concession stand. The result is that prior to each game, food is prepared by four cooks in the high school kitchen, then trucked down to the stand in hot boxes. The stand is using the same computerized checkout system as the school’s cafeterias. “It’s only the second quarter?” says Lisa Bonnaure, ringing up an order of cola and fries. “I thought it was half-time, looking at this crowd.”

“All these girls work their cans off,” says Joe Sgro, who transports food from the high school to the concession stand. Retired from running Sgro’s Restaurant on Campbell’s Run Road, he now works at the school. “They keep me going. We all work together as a team.”

What many of the fans waiting in long lines for a hotdog or slice of pizza don’t seem to realize is that there is another, completely unoccupied window around the back of the concession stand. There Kim Albert and Richelle Damico stand, waiting for a customer.

“We call this the VIP window,” Albert says with a laugh.
