Student Runs SF's New Scoreboard

One of the most talked-about features of the new stadium is the Jumbotron-style video screen on the new scoreboard. It was given to the school by Daktronics, a company that has supplied scoreboards to the University of Oklahoma, PNC Park, and Heinz Field. In exchange for the free scoreboard, Daktronics sells ad space as both videos play during the game and panels run across the structure housing the board.

On this night, the job of running the scoreboard video falls to Phil Henry, one of four South Fayette students specially trained in operating the board (the others are Matt Shuck, Noah Sahady, and Nick Showman). “I’ve always been interested in media, so I jumped at the chance to do this when the opportunity was there,” Henry says.

Hunched over a computer screen in the press box, he keeps tabs on the game, waiting for the right moment to change graphics as the game progresses. Along with running the video, the students also create the graphics. It’s a time-consuming process, but they’ve already created images of the Lions’ skill position players. Look for more as the season continues.
