Senior Lauren
Holmes has been selected to receive the Pennsylvania Award
for Creative Achievement in The Arts by Penn State University.
All of the honorees, along with their parents and the teacher
who supported their application, were invited to attend a
special program of activities and the recognition
ceremony/luncheon on September 28, 2007, at the University Park
Campus.
Eleventh grader Gary
Fleisner was one of 14
students in the area selected to participate in the ASPIRE
Program sponsored by Equitable Resources. This two-year program
pairs area students with employees who serve as mentors to help
students prepare for their post-secondary goals. Mentors and
students participate in monthly educational and social
activities, and students are able to gain valuable experience
and knowledge through their participation in the program. Last
year, senior Jake Seiner completed
his second year in the program and was also selected as the
recipient of a $10,000 scholarship offered by the group.
Sophomore James
Broderick, of Boy Scout
Troop 148 in Crafton, recently completed his Eagle Scout Service
Project. James’ service project focused on building a “bluebird
trail” of 24 birdhouses along the three miles of the Montour
Trail that run between Cecil Henderson Road and McConnell Road.
The population of eastern bluebirds has been dropping in the
Northeast due to loss of habitat. Bluebirds are beneficial
because they keep the insect population in check. An adult
bluebird will consume up to 1,000 insects a day, and this helps
to make areas like the Montour Trail more enjoyable for the
walkers, runners, and bikers who use it on a daily basis. James
has been working toward his Eagle Scout rank for 4-1/2 years.
Two former members
of the High School’s Vocal Express Show Choir have earned
coveted choir positions in their respective colleges. Katie
Yalch, Class of 2006,
has been accepted into “The Singing Lions,” Penn State’s
Premier Show Choir. There are 20 students in the group (10 women
and 10 men). The Choir performs on the East Coast for various
functions throughout the year. Seth
Evans, Class of 2007,
was accepted into the Emory and Henry College Show Choir that
only accepts 12 students each year. Seth will be touring this
first year in Vienna and Munich.
South
Fayette Celebrates its Summer Readers
The Summer Reading
Program was a tremendous success with more than 50 families
participating in the program. Students read books and took
Accelerated Reader tests to continue improving their literacy
throughout the summer months. The students also enjoyed all the
crafts, story times, “recipes,” raffles, and book making.
