Teachers Earn Recognition
South Fayette High
School’s Social Studies Department has much to be proud of
this fall, as two teachers have earned prestigious awards.
Mrs.
Julia Martin has been named Pennsylvania Secondary Level Social
Studies Teacher of the Year by the Pennsylvania Council for
Social Studies (PCSS). She received her award on October 11,
2007 at the PCSS Conference in Valley Forge.
Nominated by
District administrators, Martin submitted a narrative of her
accomplishments, as well as letters of recommendation from
parents, students, administrators, and colleagues for review by
the Council. Additionally, she submitted a sample unit of
instruction, including lesson plans, assessments, activities,
lectures, movies, and power point presentations.
PCSS recognizes
outstanding teachers for their ability to develop and use
instructional materials with students creatively and
effectively, to incorporate and demonstrate the use of
innovative instructional techniques, to utilize new research
from social studies and related appropriate disciplines, and to
foster a spirit of inquiry and the development of skills in
students to acquire, organize, process, and use information to
make decisions related to a community, state, regional, national
or international issue or concern.
This is Martin’s
fifth year at South Fayette where she teaches 9th grade Civics,
Advanced Placement United States History (11th grade), and
Psychology and Sociology (11th and 12th grades).
Mrs. Mary Chambon
has also been selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction
by the National Society of High School Scholars. A role model to
pupils, Mrs. Chambon was nominated by student Prashant Gabani
for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in
teaching. The Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award
recognizes teachers who have made a lasting difference in their
classrooms by encouraging students to strive for excellence.
Chambon has been
with the District for 24 years and teaches Honors Civics and
Child Psychology. This is her second consecutive year to be
named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction.
