Health,
Fitness & Mental Alertness
I never take the
time to really ask myself why it is worth staying in shape? I
have been lucky enough through genetics to be able to eat just a
bout anything in moderation. We grow up in an era that preaches
a daily regime of health and fitness to our growing youth. You
hear about it on the local news almost weekly. This food item is
bad for you, that is high in fats or calories or sugar, or it
doesn’t have enough nutrients….you hear this almost every
day. As a society we are promoting a higher degree of knowledge
about being healthy, along with the fact that we must exercise
in order to fully benefit.
Due to almost
everyone having an increase in their work load, things don’t
always go as planned. Children are born, you have to relocate
for a job and increasing stress at work are just a few things
that get in the way of keeping to a health and fitness program.
I have to admit
that personally my fitness level has improved as a result of
playing with and carrying my first child, but my health has also
suffered because of lack of sleep. My baby has started walking
and that has increased back pain as you try teaching balance and
coordination while walking duckfooted and hunched over behind
them.
The trick to
everything is moderation. Why overeat, why drink to excess?
Moderate your intake on everything and things should be
moderately okay.
Every person has an
individual responsibility to decide on what and how much goes
into our bodies. Same thing goes for what we do to our bodies.
Have you tried going for a walk every other day? Try to do a
push-up or a pull-up. When was the last time you actually used
your muscles or body except as a support to keep you upright?
Being in the family
business that’s existed for 150 years has let me see what
happens when people do not exercise or eat well. I see it first
hand when people lose almost all of their original body weight,
not just because of disease but because of lack of personal care
and motivation. I see 85 year-olds still driving, working and
living full lives as normal social individuals. On another day I
see someone who is 45 overweight and can’t work because of
their physical condition.
The key to
longevity is activity, and that being said I would suggest a
couple of things:
Activity defined as
doing something related to physical work! Go for a walk with a
friend and bring a bottle of water and carry it in your hand,
alternating hands every 5 minutes. Mow the grass (with your push
mower)! Take a tour of your local park or neighborhood and take
advantage of public walking trails that abound in our area.
Last but not least,
keep your mind sharp and active. Do a crossword puzzle, or write
a poem, or work on your family genealogy. Get involved with your
local community organizations or a club that interests you.
Crafting is a great way to pass time and keep mind and body
active to produce a product of love.
As we were taught
in school at an early age: moderation in everything and plenty
of physical and mental exercise.
