Office Christmas
It doesn’t have to be the worst afternoon of your life

By Brian Knavish

Like many things related to the holidays, enjoying the season at work depends largely on your perspective. Company holiday parties, for example, can be a great chance to socialize with co-workers outside of the office and meet their families, or they can be a painful reminder of why you’re so happy to leave work each day. A few tips for making the most of the season while on the clock:

Company holiday parties come in two varieties – those that are really fun and those that really aren’t. If you’re lucky enough to encounter the first, enjoy! If you’re one of the unfortunate souls attending the latter, we suggest playing “Holiday Party Bingo.” Here’s what you do – take a plain piece of paper and draw a five-by-five grid of squares. Then fill each grid with a scene you’re almost certain to witness that night. A few examples are “Frumpy co-worker with surprisingly attractive wife,” “Guy complaining about food,” and “Co-worker ordering drinks three at a time.” Each time you spot one of these things happening, mark the square. First one at your table to get bingo wins.

Speaking of alcohol, if your company offers an open bar, don’t go nuts. Nothing is more awkward than the first morning back at work after you’ve told everyone in the company what you really thought of them a few days prior. If you insist on imbibing heavily, try to stick with the same drink. As Mike Royko once said, if you started with bourbon, champagne, vodka, and rum, stick with bourbon, champagne, vodka or rum. It’ll make the next morning a little more tolerable.

If this is the first time your significant other has attended one of your company’s parties, a preliminary briefing might be a good idea. Let him or her know that Roger is a bit histrionic, Larry loves anything in a skirt, and to never, ever, under any circumstances, bring up politics around Brian.

If your company holds a Secret Santa, hope that you draw your own name. If that fails, put an effort into finding a decent gift. When the day comes to open gifts, you don’t want to be the guy who was too lazy to pick out a thoughtful present.

Above all, relax and have fun. The holidays are stressful enough without letting work get you down.
