The
Promise of a New Year
By
Tim McNellie
Samuel Beckett’s
play “Krapp’s Last Tape” is about a man who has kept an
audio diary of every year of his life. In the opening scene, Krapp
sits listening to a tape recording of himself 30 years ago. The
young voice on the tape laments the fact that he can’t stop
eating bananas – he loves the things and just can’t put them
down. Then he tells himself that he has to cut them out. But as he
sits listening, the now elderly Krapp has already stuffed one
banana into his mouth, thrown the peel on the ground, and has a
second tucked into his waistband.
We’re
just weeks away from that time of the year when many of us will
make resolutions of our own, when we’ll decide that, despite the
odds and past evidence, now is the time we can finally become the
people we really want to be. New Year’s Day is eternal hope in
holiday form, the one time each year when you convince yourself
that that that Arby’s, beer, and television-loving person you’ve
spent years developing into can finally become a fit and refined
man of letters and good taste – the person you know that you
really have inside. And though similar efforts may have fallen
flat in the past, as evidenced by that closet full of old fitness
equipment and the bookshelf sprinkled with dust-covered diet
books, there’s something about being human that makes us think
that this is the year when things will be different.
And maybe for a few
it will be. Those driven souls will sweat, starve, and browbeat
themselves all the way to the greener grass on the other side of
the hill. As for the rest of us, we'll try again after this next
banana...
