Campus Notes
The Allegheny
Intermediate Unit held its annual History Bowl at the Heinz
History Center during the week of October 30-November 2.
Students from all over Allegheny County came together to visit
many of the exhibits and complete challenging activities
inspired by them. This year’s competition included the History
of Glass, the British, French, and Indian War, the Sports
Museum, and Soul Soldiers. Congratulations to Maria Druchniak,
Sara Vallelunga, Jonathan Walasik, Nikita Bokil, Anthony Lee,
Rachel Staley, Brianna Hudock, and Cara Lyons for representing
South Fayette Middle School. Congratulations also to Jeremy
DiBattista, Alex Frazier-Francis, Sarah Hertzler, Nick Karafilis,
Wyatt Mauti, Connor Phoennik, Devan Sandala, and Matthew Speidel
for competing in the History Bowl’s Grades 4-5 category.
South Fayette
Middle school is pleased to announce that a grant of $500 has
been received from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance. This
grant was applied for by Mrs. Labutta in March, and word has
just been received that our school is one of the recipients.
Many thanks are extended to the operators of the Exxon Service
Station on Washington Road, Bridgeville, for their participation
in this grant program, sponsored by ExxonMobil and Tri-State
Petroleum. Their participation in this program made our
application for the grant possible.
Puppetry
is an art form which communicates beyond age, culture,
ethnicity, language and education. On November 5 the
kindergarten, first and second grade students enjoyed a puppet
show presented by Ms. Laura Opshinsky, an Artist in Residence
from the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Ms. Opshinsky completed
a residency with the second grade students from November 5-19.
During the introductory performance, Ms. Opshinsky demonstrated
several different types of puppets she has made as well as how
to do the movements and sound effects. The culminating puppet
show with the second grade students using their own puppets was
held on November 19.
South Fayette
Elementary students have been busy selling Big Ben BBQ sauce –
and all proceeds from the
sale benefit technology in the Elementary Building. At the end
of the first Big Ben BBQ “blitz,” the students had raised
$1,162.75 and two more “blitzes” are planned before the end
of the school year.
Several fourth
grade students had the honor of representing South Fayette
Elementary School at the Allegheny County History Bowl
Competition in November, held at the Senator John Heinz
Pittsburgh Regional History Center. The fourth grade
representatives included: Jocelyn Colussy, Sarah Deutsch,
Carolyn Dobies, Joey Franjione, Aaron James, Erika Levine,
Zachary Lutz, and Rachel Williams.
At the History
Center, teams of students were given a schedule and assignments
of five different activity centers throughout the History Center
to complete for the competition. The different activity centers
were: Clash of Empires, Sports—Who am I?, Great Hall
Estimation, Glass, and Special Collections.
On November 2,
seventy-five students from South Fayette High School
participated in the National Vocabulary Championship Qualifying
Exam. Students took the one-hour exam throughout the school day
and some even stayed after school on Friday afternoon to take
the test. Based on their performances on the exam, Stephanie
Boehmer and Katie Terrell will represent South Fayette High
School in the Pittsburgh Area Championship on January 14, where
the winner will receive $5,000 toward college tuition, the title
of NVC Pittsburgh Area Champion, and a trip to Los Angeles
(along with a parent or guardian) to compete in the NVC Finals
in March.
The Citywide
Championship will be held at Keystone Oaks High School at 5:30
