School Fitness Center Open to Public

Resolving to get fit for the New Year often seems like a fine idea in the warm glow of the holiday season’s final days. But then comes that cold, overcast January day when one decides that perhaps some other day would be a better time to venture out for a walk or a jog.

At the South Fayette High School Fitness Center, township residents can escape the winter cold, get a workout on top-of-the-line treadmills, ellipticals, and other equipment, and even save a few dollars over the cost of a commercial gym.

For as little as $10 a month, any South Fayette resident may utilize the center, which contains 19 weight-resistance exercise machines and 10 cardiovascular machines. Seniors, students, and school staff may use the center free of charge.

All fitness center newcomers must complete an application form and schedule an initial training session. The forms are available online at www.southfayette.org/athletics/fitnesscenter.htm or at the facility itself. At the initial session, which can be arranged by calling 412-221-4542, ext. 248, a staff member will acquaint newcomers with the machines and help develop a program appropriate for that individual.

Gym-goers will receive school photo ID cards to access the gym during public hours, which are: Monday-Thursday: 6 a.m. to 7:10 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday: 6 a.m. to 7:10 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
