On My Mind

A Magical Silence

There are a multitude of reasons for being thankful around Christmastime, such as the gathering of family and friends, the sparkling tree ornaments, and the warmth and leaping flames of a crackling fire. We watch the excitement on the children’s faces as the time for opening presents draws near. We admire the dining table with holiday dinner. We move our feet a little to the rhythms of the seasonal music, and wipe a tear or two as we watch the Christmas movie classics.

For each of us, there’s a special moment that reflects the magic of Christmas. For us, it’s the silence of Christmas Day. The whole world comes to a blissful stop. The blaring ads, the talking heads, the loud DJs, the ever-present background music, all the noises that proclaim normality 364 days, fall away on Christmas Day, leaving us with the gift of silence to enjoy this one special moment.

In this issue of The South Fayette Source, we have given our writers and editors free rein to express their feelings, hopes, and experiences about the holidays. The results ought to keep you pouring over the magazine for hours. Some of the stories reflect on the magic of the moment, others the spirit of hope that pervades Christmas. A few show that beneath a writer’s skepticism, there beats a heart of pure sentimentality. These stories will make you laugh and cry.

Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa...we all share the simple human need for some inner peace. We hope the blessings of the holiday season come your way too.

— M.C. and Brian McKee, Publishers
