South Fayette 6th grader
Cara Lyons has been recognized
for her exemplary volunteer
service by being presented
with the President’s Volunteer
Service Award. The award
recognizes Americans of all
ages who have volunteered
significant amounts of time to
serve their communities. Cara
received her award from the
Prudential Spirit of
Community Awards program
on behalf of the President’s
Council on Service and Civic
Participations. For the past
two years, Cara has logged
more than 70 hours of
community work delivering
meals for Meals on Wheels,
volunteering at Country
Meadows, singing for patients
at Molinaro Nursing Home and
caroling during the holidays at
nursing homes with her Girl
Scout Troop.
South Fayette senior
Alison Supko has earned the
Comcast Leaders and
Achievers Scholarship for
2008. Supko is ranked first in
her graduating class at South Fayette and is captain of the
Cheerleading squad, president
of the Drama Club and
Chorus, and is treasurer of the
senior class. She is also the
secretary of the High School’s
French Club. Alison will
attend the University of
Pittsburgh’s Honors College to
receive her Doctorate Degree
in Pharmacy.
South Fayette Middle
School students took part in
the MATHCOUNTS “mock”
competition on January 10 at
Moon Area Middle School.
Students from Moon, Mount
Lebanon, Peters Township, and
South Fayette worked
individually and in teams to
practice the national
tournament’s format: a sprint
round, a target round, and a
team round. The top 10
scorers then advanced to the
Countdown Round, where
Jessica Barton placed 9th out of
approximately 60 students.
The following students
represented South Fayette
Middle School: Abby Bastaroli,
Katie Boehmer, Joe Caffrey,Carolyn Drozynski, Mandy Flynn,
Mary Janocha, Brad Link, Alicia
Racculia, Mallory Vetter, Isabelle
Walker, Mindy Winterhalter, and Nick Schultz.
The Allegheny Intermediate
Unit’s annual Science
Bowl was held at Carnegie
Science Center in January.
Students from all over
Allegheny County gathered to
use the Center’s various
exhibits to complete
activities and show what
they know about science.
South Fayette’s team of
Gavin Allcorn, Ryan McGowan,
Ben Meindl, and Dyllan Yankel outscored every team from
grades 5-8 who took part in
the competition.
Middle School students
Sophia Hestad and Sam
Guadagnino have been selected
to participate in the PMEA
District One Elementary Band
Allegheny West. The festival
will be held at Thomas
Jefferson High School on April
4th and 5th. The students will
be performing with 150
students from 58 schools inwestern Pennsylvania. The
band will be under the
direction of Frank Farina,
retired band director from
North Allegheny Senior High
School.
South Fayette junior
Rebecca Martinelli won the
Pittsburgh Regional
Competition of the National
Poetry Out Loud Contest on
February 23, 2008. Rebecca
presented Frank O’Hara’s
“Why I am Not a Painter” for
the competition. Rebecca will
now represent South Fayette
in the Poetry Out Loud State
Finals on March 12, 2008. This
marks the second time in
three years that South Fayette
will be represented at the
state competition. In March,
2006 senior Lora Werkmeister was named the regional
winner of the Poetry Out
Loud recitation competition,
held at the Pittsburgh
Center for the Arts. Lora
then went on to compete
in the state competition
in Harrisburg held at the
Governor’s Mansion.
