Remodeling Our Lives

Every time spring returns, we are reminded that things are always changing. Tulips start to push their spiky tips through the freshly thawed ground. Buds start to show on bushes and trees. At the same time, we seem to be inspired to create a sense of renewal in our own lives. Maybe it’s a new garden or decorating a room full of vibrant colors, or adding a waterfall in the backyard.

Some people look forward to remodeling as a sort of fresh start. Others look at change as a task, or something that we have to do in order to accomplish something else. I want to touch on the topic of remodeling in a larger sense, as it relates to our lives. Graduation, marriage, divorce, and promotion are all aspects of change, and in order to get to those points, we are forced to remodel what we are currently doing.

One of life’s biggest remodeling jobs happens when there is a death in the family. Mom was the one who took care of everything, cooking the meals and making sure the kids were taken care of; Dad took care of the mowing, taking out the garbage, and making sure the family was safe and protected. Remodeling is an understatement when it comes to the transition that a family has to bear when a loved one is lost. Checking accounts, credit cards, and titles to homes and cars are just a few of the things that need addressing and changing. Who now is going to balance the check book and pay the bills? Who will fix the leak in the faucet or weed the flower beds or cut the grass? Who is going to cook the meals?

These are questions we never really want to ask ourselves until we have to, but when it comes to other kinds of remodeling, we always take steps in order to accomplish our goals. We have a plan in place that addresses what we are going to do and when. Similarly, we should always have a plan in place when there is going to be change within our families. Being prepared is the key to a successful remodeling job, whether it is your house or your life!
