Strategic Planning and Visioning in South Fayette
Our Journey into the Future: 2008-2014

The quest to develop a strategic vision for the next six years was undertaken by the Strategic Planning and Visioning Steering Committee, beginning on February 5, 2008. A 36-member steering committee consisting of community members and staff engaged in a rigorous, but stimulating process, leading to the District’s “vision, mission, beliefs and overarching strategic goals” for 2008-2014.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them for their dedication. To accomplish this task, the team met for more than 12 hours on February 5, February 6, March 3, and March 10. They read Gary Marx’ book Sixteen Trends and reviewed extensive data associated with all operations of the school district. In addition, the committee did a “SWOT Analysis” to identify the perceived strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with all areas of the District, as well as the external environment.

After much discussion, the Strategic Planning and Visioning Committee recommended a new mission and strategic goals for the South Fayette School District.

They were approved by the Board of School Directors on March 25, 2008 and presented to the members of all Action Teams on March 26, 2008.

The Action Teams are scheduled to meet regularly to develop specific goals, activities, timelines, measures of success, and resources that will be used to carry out the mission and goals of the school district and to work towards accomplishing the vision. The action teams will present their recommendations to the Steering Committee at meetings scheduled in May and June, 2008. The final draft document will be presented to the Board of School Directors on July 15, 2008 for review. If the draft is approved on July 22, 2008, it will be available for review by the public for 30 days, with time for comment allotted at the August board meetings. The document, by law, must be submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education by no later than September 30, 2008.

Once approved, and thereafter annually, the Plan will be reviewed to determine the annual operating goals for the District. All those involved have given a great amount of their time, talent and knowledge to assure that South Fayette Schools will strive to be “the model for excellence” in all that they do.

The following were developed by the Strategic Planning and Visioning Steering Committee and approved by the Board of School Directors on March 25, 2008.
