The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who volunteer significant amounts of time to serve their communities, was presented by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President’s Council on Sixth Grader Recognized Service and Civic Participations. For the past two years, Cara has logged more than 70 hours of community work delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, volunteering at Country Meadows, singing for patients at Molinaro Nursing Home and caroling during the holidays at nursing homes with her Girl Scout Troop.

Artist-in-Residence Program Restarted
Mr. Saihou Njie will once again be working in our school as an “Artist-in-Residence”. Mr. Njie will be working with each of the fourth grade classes for more than 13 hours over the next two months to share his creative skills of storytelling, music, dance, batik, papier mache, and tie-dying. The Artist-in-Residence program is sponsored and mostly funded through the Elementary School PTA and is part of the elementary enrichment program. The theme for Mr. Njie’s residency this year will be endangered animals. “The arts are proven to stimulate and enhance student performance in all curriculum areas and to encourage the development of improved self-image and empowerment.” A fourth grade assembly on April 11 kicked-off Mr. Njie’s residency.

Arts, Communications and Humanities Career Fair
On March 27, South Fayette hosted the Arts, Communications and Humanities Career Fair, in conjunction with Peters Township High School. There were approximately 40 professionals from nearby communities and 350 students from seven different school districts in attendance. The event benefited the students in their exploration of the different careers. The professionals provided very positive feedback regarding their interactions with the students. Special thanks is extended to Mrs. Mary Quirk and Mrs. Maureen Pedzwater for all of their efforts in coordinating the event for area students interested in careers in these areas and to the many other teachers, students and professionals who made the event possible.

The Career Fair will be held at Peters Township High School in 2009 and will return to South Fayette in 2010.

BRAVO!
Bravo to the cast and crew of 75 Middle School students who presented the hilarious Medieval musical comedy, Once Upon a Mattress. Performances took place on the first weekend in May. The show, a rollicking re-telling of the “Princess and the Pea,” premiered on Broadway in 1959 and has since become one of the most often-performed titles by school and community groups. An acclaimed Broadway revival in the ’90s featured Sarah Jessica Parker and has brought this delightful show to a new generation of audiences. The show was very funny and featured a very talented cast. Congratulations to all!

Lauren Holmes Named to All-state Chorus
Please join in congratulating senior, Lauren Holmes, as she qualified for the PMEA All-State Chorus which was held in Hershey, PA on April 18.
